(thoughtfully) I was raised to avoid guns like the plague; to be very wary of them, to avoid them, never pick one up.
We had a gun in the basement, in storage in a thick blue vinyl storage bag. It was a family heirloom, passed down from Great-Uncle so-and-so, who used to be the sheriff of Something-or-Other.
It was an old gun, I don't know what kind--all I can tell you is that I used to sneak down to the basement, open the trunk, and take it out and hold it, scared to death I'd get caught. That sucker was as heavy as an iron skillet and had notches filed into the handle (snrt) ...and I don't think the owner put them there to memorize all those times he won at hopscotch.
I don't know--I'd like to learn to shoot, though I don't think I should *own* a gun--I probably would blow my face off cleaning it, or someone else's while having a blind temperfit--but I'd like to learn to shoot, see if I'm any good at it, take some safety classes. Everyone who owns a gun should take a safety class, I think. I mean, you own a car, you have to go through Driver's Ed, right?
'Course, if Mom found out I was within 50 miles of a firing range she'd have my head on a platter... :)
